Anchor Down: Storm Coming

Today is 2024 Election Day Eve and I can't help but to travel back to the 2016 election between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. I have no idea what tomorrow brings but know one thing is true, 50% of the nation will be disappointed, to say the least. This uncertainty can be unsettling, leaving us anxious, stressed, and overwhelmed.

However, as we navigate these turbulent waters, realize that the key to weathering the storm lies not in trying to control the uncontrollable, but in anchoring ourselves to our core values and cultivating positive emotions. By doing so, we can build resilience, stay grounded, and emerge from these uncertain times stronger and more adaptable than ever before.

The Power of Values in Navigating Uncertainty

Our values are the bedrock upon which we build our lives. They are the guiding principles that shape our decisions, our actions, and our relationships. When the world around us feels unstable and unpredictable, our values can serve as an anchor, keeping us centered and focused on what truly matters.

Identifying Your Core Values

Take a moment to reflect on the values that are most important to you. What principles do you hold dear? What beliefs guide your choices and actions? I have personal and professional values with common denominators: authenticity, service, and joy. My professional values extend to collaboration and integrity, and my personal values extend to freedom and nature. Write your own down and keep them close, for they will be your touchstone in the days and months to come.

Anchoring on Values: How to Stay Grounded in Times of Uncertainty

There's no doubt the whole world will be discussing and debating political conspiracies. Prepare for how you will hold your leadership and grace. There's no need to overreact as this will too pass. Once you've identified your core values, the next step is to actively incorporate them into your daily life. When faced with uncomfortable discussions or decisions ask yourself: "What would be the most aligned with my values?" Let your values be the North Star that guides you through the storm.

  1. Reflect on Your Values: Take time each day to reflect on your values and how they are showing up (or not) in your life. Take a note of it on paper or mobile.

  2. Make Decisions Aligned with Your Values: When you're confronted with a choice, big or small, pause and consider which option would be most true to your values. This can help you make decisions with clarity and confidence, even when the path forward is unclear.

  3. Share Your Values: If it feels right, share your values with the important people in your life. This helps with understanding each other.

  4. Be Intentional: Start your day with a reminder of your values.

The Role of Positive Emotions in Building Resilience

The world will need positive energy multipliers, not energy vampires. Positive emotions play a crucial role in helping us navigate uncertain times. When we experience emotions like joy, gratitude, hope, and awe, we build a reservoir of resilience that can sustain us through adversity.

Cultivating Positive Emotions: Practical Tips and Techniques

  1. Practice Gratitude: Take a few moments each day to reflect on the things you're grateful for, whether it's a loved one, a beautiful sunset, or a simple act of kindness. Expressing gratitude has been shown to improve mood, reduce stress, and foster a sense of well-being.

  2. Savor the Positive: When you experience a moment of joy or contentment, take the time to fully immerse yourself in it. Notice the details, the sensations, and the emotions you're feeling. Savoring the positive can help amplify its impact and create a lasting sense of well-being.

  3. Seek Out Awe-Inspiring Experiences: Engage in activities or seek out experiences that fill you with a sense of wonder and awe, whether it's a breathtaking natural landscape, a thought-provoking piece of art, or a scientific discovery. Awe has been linked to increased positive emotions, a greater sense of connection, and a more expansive perspective on life.

  4. Practice Mindfulness: Cultivating a mindfulness practice can help you stay present and attuned to the positive emotions that arise throughout the day. Whether it's a formal meditation session or simply taking a few deep breaths, mindfulness can help you stay grounded and connected to the present moment.

Find Your Tribe

In times of uncertainty, it can be valuable to connect with others who are navigating similar challenges. By building a network of confidants, we can draw strength, inspiration, and practical support from one another.

Look for opportunities to connect with others who share your values and are also working to cultivate resilience and positivity. This could be through online communities, local support groups, or one-on-one relationships with trusted friends or mentors.

Embracing Change and Adapting to Uncertainty

Ultimately, the key to navigating uncertainty is to embrace it as a natural part of the human experience. Change is inevitable, and our ability to adapt and grow in the face of it is what defines our resilience and leadership.

Rather than trying to control the uncontrollable, anchor yourself to your core values, cultivate positive emotions, and find your tribe.

If you find yourself revved up, reframe with these three questions to reframe:

  1. What values can I anchor on to stay grounded?

  2. What emotion will elevate us out of any situation?

  3. What outcome do I want at the end of each day?

As we continue to face the challenges and uncertainties of our world, let us embrace them with a grounded and resilient mindset, knowing that we have the power within us to weather any storm and emerge stronger than ever before.
